To quoque

A few days ago I and my house mate altogether clean our house. It was week end and our first day of fasting month. Our house is totally mess up, especially our kitchen. My friends told me to clean the kitchen, but I really don’t want to clean it because it really is messy. And we had a little debate back than, below is the conversation.

Cuky : "gilang your job today is to clean the kitchen!!You haven’t clean it since last month".
Gilang:"I am not going to clean it.You’re the one who never clean the house,so you Should clean the kitchen today".

In dialog above I was using an ad hominum to quoque fallacies to accuse Cuki of the same trait that Cuki has attribute to me.

Rhetorical question

Last night was a really dull night for me, I have no where to go, no one to go with. So I just prepared my speech for today presentation. In my group there are 9 people with various different nationalities, and I practice my speech with one of group mate. After I am ready for my presentation I went out to visit house mate room and saw him playing with his computer. And we were having a conversation

Gilang : have u prepare for our presentation ??
Ijal : I haven’t started it yet.
Gilang : you are going to present for our presentation tomorrow, aren’t you??

In above dialog I am using rhetorical question to persuade ijal to get his work done.

implicit conclusion

This is a billboard that i can easily found on every corner in Jakarta. It is a cigarettes advertising board for Sampoerna. In this poster written “Others can only follow”.
In this massage there is a hidden conclusion; means that this cigarette has an original taste while the other cigarette are only imitating their product. Therefore it’s necessary to choose this original product for smoker. They are using an implicit conclusion for this advertising billboard.

interrogative question

Last nite I went to indo cafĂ© to go for dinner, and watched a football match between AC Milan and Bologna. It was an interesting match even though my AC Milan lost the match. I came before my other friends, around 15 minutes earlier. And after a while my friends finally came in the middle of the match. And one of them asked me what match is it?? What teams?? What’s the score?? How long it’s been played??
This is an interrogative question that had been used by my friends.

fallacies

Today I went to harim restaurant. I was eaten with my housemate. We were having conversation while eating. After a while one of my friends leaved us to go to secret recipe. I don’t really know what it is; maybe I am a little old fashion, I don’t really interest in trying new food. Below is our conversation

Monty : Have you try cake from secrete recipe? It’s really nice

Gilang : is it?? I haven’t taste it before. Why it’s so nice?

Monty : because it is delicious.

In above conversation my friends ask me whether i have tried secrete recipe cake or not, he said that it is really nice. I never tried it before, so I ask him why it’s so nice. But instead of giving me valid reason he just answered it with representing the same statement. He had just using petitio principii. He play around with the answer, he is using S is true because S is true. We can see it in word nice changed to delicious.

formulating argument with "evidence"

Today I read an article from Jakarta post. It’s written that BalikPapan is the most expensive city in Indonesia. And I’ve seen that to formulating argument they used “evidence” to make this article stronger. They used a survey to come out with this conclusion. The 2008 survey was spearheaded by Mercer as part of a series of global surveys released earlier this year.

Balikpapan most expensive city in Indonesia: Survey

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Sat, 08/30/2008 6:28 PM | Headlines

If you thought Jakarta was the most expensive city in Indonesia, think again. That distinction belongs to Balikpapan, the "oil city" of East Kalimantan.

According to this year's Cost of Living Survey by PT Mercer Indonesia, Jakarta is ranked second most expensive, while Bekasi and Samarinda tie for third, followed by Bogor and Jayapura at fifth and sixth.

The survey was conducted across the country in July, two months after the government decision to increase fuel prices.

Mutiarawaty Thaher of Mercer said the rising cost of living was attributed to the fuel price hike in May and the rise in power rates in March.

"Other forms of cost increase include the toll fee hike that was implemented in Jakarta in September 2007," Mutiarawaty said in a press statement.

The cost of living was derived from prices of food and basic needs, transportation, utilities, housing, education, healthcare, entertainment and sports.

In the entertainment and sports categories Jakarta ranked the country's most expensive city.

A number of cities decreased in their rankings in the 2006 survey. Denpasar, which scored 80 points, declined 16 places while Banjarmasin dropped 10 places. Cities with higher ranks included Bekasi (94) going from 10th in 2006 to third this year and Medan (89) rising from 15th to eighth.

The 2008 survey was spearheaded by Mercer as part of a series of global surveys released earlier this year.

Based on a survey conducted in 143 cities around the world, Jakarta ranked the second most expensive city in Southeast Asia after Singapore.
